Christina Birrer is an artist of the land using photography. The work confronts directly the dichotomy of modern life and earth life across millennia. Birrer uses performative gesture and community based research to weave past and present, investigating endemic anomalies whose fragile ecosystems mirror that of concurrent ethnologic systems. Feminism, community activism, and biodynamic practice inform the imagery and concepts embedded in ‘interconnected’- a cri de cœur and a meditation on natural earth processes.

I fell in love with the letters on the page. Not the words, but the letters. My love for typography and graphic design has grown immensely in the past few years. Jade Teran, Fine Art Photography
My current work focuses on the rejection of traditional formality and form commonly displayed in portraiture. Every person’s body demonstrates a unique set of characteristics, and as an artist, I enjoy exploring the different contours and shapes to present something unfamiliar to the human eye.
While I do create traditional prints, my current collections also explore sculpture. The ability to bring a 2D work into a three-dimensional space enables me as an artist to engage with my work more while exploring physical layers and manipulations. The sculptural aspect of my work allows the viewer to have different perspectives while walking around the work and creates a more personal experience.

I found that my love for organization and desire to keep things color coordinated would actually help me find a career and a newfound passion. I love taking quotes and any silly thing I hear from my friends and turning them into pseudo-companies and designs for t-shirts and hopefully for a clothing brand I hope to launch.

I attended a ton of concerts when I was growing up. I’ve made life-long friends all over the country because of concerts and bands. I bought my first camera in 2010 and I couldn’t wait to start documenting these fantastic events that I had been attending almost every weekend since I was 12.
Photographing the connection between musicians and their fans has become one of my favorite things. I love the energy that performers, and crowds, create — It’s very unique; I have yet to experience similar energy anywhere else.

Loren Kane, Observational Painter
I am a figurative-abstract oil painter. I try to understand life in this world through colorful, large-scale pieces. My work focuses on struggle. My own personal struggles. Our larger, cultural struggles. I’m a bit of an anthropologist and like to work on-site with others, drawing from their process and experiences.
For me, a painting is a journal. I document events and emotions and try to work through them on the canvas. I often write text on my canvas. Usually painting over it. Yet the unseen text has a powerful influence on my creative process. What you don’t see is boldly present in what you do see. Perhaps one day after I’m gone conservators at The Getty Conservation Institute will x-ray my paintings and reveal the text beneath the text.

My work is based in a broad mix of illustration styles. One of my favorite things about illustration is how it interacts with the world. As kids illustrations are our first form of interaction with art and we use these illustrations to learn about our world. As children, illustrations are in the books read to us and the shows we watch. We learn from them and we grow as people with them. As we get older, many things change but illustration remains a constant in our world. We see illustrations in magazines, books, advertisements, and even the how-to instructions that come with furniture. Illustrations are an art form everyone interacts with. Many people cherish it. I am an illustrator to be a part of this process and to be a part of people’s lives.

As a portrait artist, my mission is to capture not only memories but growth as well. Growth in myself as a person, as an artist, and you! My process begins by trying to understand your life and experiences. By learning about your story you and I can select the best media to bring your portrait to life. From there I start with preliminary sketches. With your feedback, we’ll shape the portrait into a final work of art.

I am a graphic designer and illustrator based in California. I studied graphic design at California State University of Long Beach, where I learned why visual communication is vital. I have experience doing logo design and vector art and I enjoy doing them.
Whether I’m watching tutorials, listening to artist lectures, doing challenges, visiting artist’s websites, reading articles, or documenting packaging design in public, I am always interested in how I can improve my craft. When I am designing, I create with the intention of transforming effective concepts into reality that is visually compelling.

When I was younger I always had a focus and desire to create art and express ideas that some would consider abstract or otherworldly. As I’ve progressed through life, I have gained the skills and techniques needed to bring an open mind and imagination to my artwork that allows me to create outside the box. Every creation, whether it’s in paint or sculpture, is attempted as a way to push my skills and knowledge to allow new and unexpected creations to emerge on canvas or 3-dimensional materials.
Toria Maldonado, Illustration/Community Art
I’m a multidisciplinary visual artist from and currently based in so called Long Beach, California on Tongva land. My pronouns are they/them. I make figurative portraits of myself and the people around me that depict my experiences in relation to vulnerability, intimacy, and connection. I also make digital illustrations that address contemporary issues surrounding ideas of self, identity, and community. I often employ different methods like collage, painting, printmaking, and photography to conceptualize ideas into physical and emotional explorations. The motivation behind my art-making is typically initiated by issues I fixate on to either engage, challenge, or to better understand. In my practice, I’ve learned to use many creative tools to cope with both personal and communal struggles.

My favorite part of the CSULB School of Art (SOA) is visiting the SOA Art Gallery Courtyard each week. Every week 5 more student artists share their unique lives, experiences, and aesthetics with the campus community.
My one disappointment is that so many of these engaging artists don’t have websites. I’m fortunate this semester to be teaching the SOA’s first ePortfolios for Artists class. If the students have learned half as much as I have this semester, then they have learned a lot.
A portfolio is a never-ending part of an artist’s life journey. I feel privileged to have helped these students launch web portfolios. I am excited to see where the sinuous paths of their careers take them in the years and decades to come.
