Jane’s Walk LA ’17

Urban planner, activist & lover of vibrant neighborhoods, Jane Jacobs was born on 4 May 1916 and she died on 25 April 2006. A year later, in May 2007 Jane’s Walk was launched. Held every year on the 1st weekend in May, Jane’s Walk is a celebration of Jacobs’ birthday, her life & work, and of local neighborhoods & communities across the globe.

I became the Jane’s Walk City Organizer for Los Angeles just a week before the 2017 walks. I scheduled 2 walks to lead myself: New Taipei & Venice Beach. I also attended one of the Jane’s Walk Long Beach walks led by my former student Katie Rispoli Keaotamai. All 3 walks were small and vibrant. Something about Jane’s Walk & Jane Jacobs’ sensibility seems to attract smart, engaged people who care about neighborhoods.

I’ve agreed to be the Los Angeles City Organizer for Jane’s Walk 2018 and am looking forward to having a lot more time to bring in many more Walk Leaders and many more Walkers.
