This week’s art experience is automatic drawing. My partner is my sister. I had a hard time convincing her to do this project with me. The thing is me and my sister fight a lot, but through this project we had a lot of fun. Our material is the back of a wall mount calendar and my over five-years-old blue pen. We sit on my bed facing each other, hold the pen with all 4 hands, eyes closed and relax, let the line flow. It may sound simple to do, but it is not. We keep laughing and it took us a while to settle. It doesn’t last very long until we start free roaming. While it lasts, I find this extremely relaxing.
This was the silliest thing I have very done for an art project. I did not expect it, but I enjoyed those few minutes that I got to relax and just let the drawing do itself. At the beginning I wondered and overthought the process because it did not make sense to just let the pencil do the work. I asked my mother to do this because she is always in a rushed manner and this was a good way for us to bond and for her to stop for a moment and not think about things we have to do later.

This exercise was a complete blast, and i call it an exercise because after about 5 minutes of holding a pencil without any support you tend to feel it in the arms. so i did this piece with my sister as part of our weekly bonding, because i barely get to see her during the week as we go to different schools and are really busy with work and school schedules…
I’ll say nothing happen for the first three minutes I was holding the pencil after which it Slowly started to move, it’s strange to think that without us intentionally moving this pencil it moves on its own. I kid you not when i say this but as soon as it started to move my sister screamed “its moving!”…
This art was really fun and I think I even heard my mom says she’s going to Frame it. PS: my mom tends to joke a lot.
The experience was great because automatic drawing allow me to reflect upon the subconscious mind. I knew and was consciously aware of what I was doing, but did not know of the feelings and desires of the subconscious mind, the automatic mind. I have heard about how the subconscious mind is not the truth of reality, and that the conscious mind is the reality of truth. However, I believe that the whole truth to reality and the whole reality to truth is the subconscious mind and the conscious mind. The subconscious mind brings out the feelings that you can not see, dark and light .And the conscious mind embraces the feelings that you know, evil and love.
This was by far the funniest art experience yet. It was so difficult not to laugh while doing this. I am not sure if it was the assignment or the fact that I chose my husband as my partner. It was frustrating to try and not lead the pencil around; because we knew we were pretty much just scribbling. It was hilarious when we opened our eyes only to see that we drew like 2 year olds. When we were done my husband said we should try and draw something together with our eyes open. So we are looking forward to that now.
This was really fun. Somehow my sister and I did not fight over who was going to take control of the pens, we just let it go.
The result of the drawing was very chaotic at first, but on a closer look, there is a lot of consistency between the marks made on the page. There are parts of the piece that are more jumbled and darker, signaling the parts of our conversation that may have been more serious or sad. I feel our emotions and the tone of the conversation as it went are captured well in this image.
Overall, the experience was worth the initial uneasiness. I feel this is a good technique for building or restoring closeness and intimacy between two individuals.
1.We believe that both artists’ pieces can be both physical and virtual. How you can’t interact either one physically but you can be there and somewhat say you were there physically.
2.Fantasy can not become a reality, but you can picture yourself in it. However, you cannot bring others into your fantasy. We believe that fantasy is the imaginative world while reality serves as the physical world.
3.Just because a book is not non fiction and is entirely made up, it does not mean that you cannot connect with the story on a deeper level emotionally. We compared the Harry Potter books to the Bible where people may view it as fictional but use it as their guidance through life emotionally and physically.
4.With painting and writing, we believe that compared to cyberspace, it is more thoughtful because you did it with your hands. Not saying that you don’t do anything with your hands in cyberspace, you’re interacting by using your hands, but you’re letting the computer perform the actions rather than your actual hands. We used an example of writing a thank you card, if you typed it as opposed to handwriting it, it would feel less genuine than actually taking the time to write it out.

1) Virtual art is kind of real in a fictional manner. To begin with, you can’t touch real art anyways but every virtual character that Vanessa Blaylock has created has taken some sort of attribute or values from another individual.
2) A character that befits people’s belief would be considered real. If they believe then if is real for them.
3)Harry Potter is really based on the perception on the people. Harry Potter was the reality of the author so those who believe in her reality can make the link that he is real for her fans. If people believe in that reality then it is real.
Vanessa Blaylock seems more like performance art that tries to expand the world, while Joseph Cornell creates a world and tries to fit it in a small little box. We feel as though Vanessa’s work can connect others because they can allow people to communicate through other characters while Joseph’s is more isolationist because you can admire a private little world. The idea of the character Mickey Mouse is a reality with the connections the character is able to create. While the character itself is not physically real. Though Harry Potter is fantasy the ideas and morals that this series if books creates is very much a reality. Within the book the characters face many trials and losses but in the end they overcome them by sticking together. Harry lost his parents when he was only a year old and is sent to live with his neglectful and sometimes abusive aunt and uncle but throughout the series he meets people that care very much about him and finds more of a family relationship with them than he ever could with his aunt and uncle. The Harry Potter series teaches about the values of friendship and how you can find a family in people who are not biologically related to you. We believe that the arts of writing, painting and cyberspace are able to communicate many different ideals. The purpose of these arts, after all, is to invoke certain feelings or ideals that the artist thinks are important.

Question 1: Are they real or virtual?
We believe that they are both real. Although you can physically touch Cornell’s creations, Blaylock’s art works are still real. While you may not be able to physically touch them, they still exist on a computer some where.
Question 2:There is no difference between fantasy and reality – is there?
We think that there is in fact no difference between fantasy and reality. While we can say from our perspective, a video game may be fantasy, we cannot tell whether or not our reality is a fantasy of another reality.
Question 3: Harry potter is fiction – does that mean Harry Potter is less meaningful or important than a work of non fiction?
We do not think that just because something is fiction it makes that thing less meaningful. If something that is fictional such as an alternate reality can have a big emotional impact on someones life, then it is just as important as something that is non-fiction.
Question 4: Comparing old and new art.
We think that old and new forms of art all have a special meaning. For some people, they may be able to appreciate older styles of art but they may be able to relate more to newer styles of art such as cyber space. We do not think one is better than the other. It is a matter of how an individual reacts emotionally to the artwork.

We think that both artists are similar in some ways, as both works give signification to their work. Vanessa’s work is avatars and virtual. People get to play a character that is not real but is given meaning. Joseph’s work is real boxes but they are not as real because they are imaginative ideas. They are beautiful but less meaningful than Vanessa’s. Both artists are also different because their work has different meanings and significations to the artists and those who view them.
Fantansy vs Reality is similar in that something fake like Mickey Mouse can create so much like money, movies, memories for kids. Also as the more power that is given to something unreal the more real and meaningful it can become. Fantasy can’t exist without reality, because you need someone to imagine that fantasy world. There is a relationship between the two things because you need reality for fantasy to exist.
Fictional characters like Harry Potter can be less or more meaningful depending on the person as many people do not care for him, while others love the character. In general people can learn a lot about human connections through books, even if it is made up, they can learn about people relating together. It can sometimes be more meaningful than their real life relationships. It is more meaningful due to its large fan base.
We think that we are able to talk about things that are meaningful to us through different medians. Everyone has different opinions, ways of thinking and expressing themselves. Through painting, writing, singing, online blogs. No certain way of expressing yourself is better or more important than the other.
Vanessa Blaylock and Joseph Cornell are both real and virtual world artist. Both of them create worlds that fit their views and artist abilities. Both are art forms but Joseph’s work requires more skills and hands on work, while Vanessa uses more technology then hands on work. Joseph was influenced by thirft stores and trash. He wanted to make them beautiful again to showcase them. While Vanessa draws influence from her fanasty. We believe that they are both real representations of reality.
There is a difference between fanstasy and reality but fanstany can be influencal just like reality. Like in devolping new ideas and making them become reality. For example, the invention of cars was fanstasy that turned reality. We believe that fantasy is in no way less valuable or relevant than reality. Rather, it is often more powerful than reality in that it generates inspiration and motivation that people may not be able to find within their realities. We feel that painting, writing, and cyberspace are all able to effectively connect to modern issues that are relevant to us. While art and creative writing are especially effective in connecting to emotion, cyberspace seems to be most accessible and most effective in connecting to social and world issues.

Question 1: The two artists are not the same. Vanessa Blaylock is virtual it is an avatar. An avatar is in a virtual world it represents a person who can’t physically actual feel emotions. On the other hand, the other artist Joseph Cornell is a physical box. Although it is not a physical person it is still physically in the real word.
Question 2: In a fantasy one can express emotions but the characters in them cant actually feel anything. In a real world people are more consciousnesses of what is going on and people won’t show their emotions like in a fantasy. For example a dream one might experience feelings that are subconscious and may be unaware to even the person having the dream
Question 3: Although Harry Potter has been established into movies from books he is still not real. An actor portrays Harry Potter and tries to act like him. Despite doing a great job as acting as him at the end of the day he still has to go back to being who he truly is a real person.
Question 4: Paintings, writing, and cyberspace all can represent the real world. Many things can go unnoticed because they are symbolic. For example in writing words can illustrate pictures in our head, in paintings we feel things in our subconscious and it makes us think about an issue and analyze it, finally in cyberspace we think about things as unbelievable that we can only hope for like living in space.
Vanessa’s art is more virtual with a hit of reality because most of her images are based off of real people in situations and images because of the way that she is using the virtual ways that she uses her character. In Joseph’s pieces he uses real life objects that people can touch and relate to what people can actually have or touch in real life.
Fantasy is something that will never exist and lingers through your imagination and reality takes more effort and the human brain to wander compared to reality where the mind is conformed to thinking one way and that is the logical way.
Harry Potter isn’t meaningless because the character is more significant than the act that plays Harry because of the thought and actions that are put into the character. Harry Potter is a timeless character that everyone can relate to in some way, just like non-fiction characters that people can also relate to in real life issues. Most of American and other cultural beliefs are based on myths and legends that are passed down from imagination or “real life cases”.
These things are used to connect with the time of era and illustrates how we evolve as a culture and it demonstrates the way we interact as a society. Art is used to portray everyday issues because art is everywhere.

The two artists, Vanessa Blaylock and Joseph Cornell, both have similar themes. Blaylock uses virtual reality to create realistic models that represent how humans would look in cyberspace. On the other hand, Cornell’s creations have a virtual connotation. This is due to the glass that covers the box. It create an atmosphere since humans are able to peer into a different universe. It creates a different world. Fantasies are different realities for each idiosyncratic individual, but each person will perceive it as their own “other” reality. But, everyone does share the same reality in real life, we all co-exist in the same universe. Yet, each person will have an infinite amount of universes that is unique to them. Although Harry Potter is a fictional fantasy novel, it does not make it any less meaningful than non-fiction. Harry Potter still depicts meaningful universal themes. But it allows for the reader to escape into a new world and explore new themes in different ways. This also allows the reader to use their imagination. Painting, writing, and cyber space, all allow humans to explore and convey ideas in different methods comfortable to each individual. Painting depicts visual imagery and for emotion to be conveyed with colors, texture, etc. Writing allows for different denotations and for feelings to be conveyed in a literature, using different characters, motifs, and symbols. Cyber space allows for reality to be inserted in a virtual, more exaggerated sense. These methods are all similar because they all have the ability create an image that is impossible to create in real life.
It’s a little bit of both since it started out a something physical that you could touch and interact with, but ended up being a glass so it’s now in a virtual reality. With Cornell, the art not being used for its original purpose makes that shift, even though the shift was made to preserve it, it still defeats the purpose of its making and makes it accessible. If it was used for its original purpose which is to be played with, its beauty would not have been preserved and we would have neither the physical or virtual reality attached to the art. With Blaylock her work is virtual so it is inaccesible physically.
Reality and fantasy are two things that can be interlaced in everyday lives. Fantasy leads reality, and guides us a to what we want in our reality. Reality is all up to perception, some people live in a fantasy and others lean more towards whats real; each individual has their own reality but everyone as a whole lives separate realities, so as a whole its up to perception of the individual.
Harry Potter is not real but it still can express the full potential of idea, emotion … the way that the author writes down on text is very detail, the author even state what we didn’t see on the eyes like the thought of character, in most situation it can express more idea than a real person. We feel like the message makes more significance than where it came from. Harry Potter may be a fictional story, but it’s influence is able to expand way more than some non-fiction works out there since it captures the reader and conveys a meaningful story about friends, rebellion, and fighting for loved ones.
Painting, writing, and cyberspace, allow us to express ourselves in different ways. We felt that there wasn’t a method that was better than the other because all of them are a means of expressing yourself in different medias and each hold their own importance in our lives and all 3 methods are permanent. These methods will always be utilized in different ways and all hold the same weight in terms of importance and utility.

The two artist are similar in the way that both have different perceptions that are connected to interpreting their artwork through different senses. Joseph Cornell chooses his art to be interpreted through touch so that the users can possible interpret it in their own way. Ironically most of his work has been put behind glass displays due to preservation of the art.
There is a difference between fantasy and reality. For every individual their fantasies creates expectations for the their reality. Sometimes though individuals think their reality should be exactly like their reality.
3.Not necessarily since works of fiction can carry out messages that are meaningful although the means of carrying out those messages are not as conventional or sometimes realistic as works of nonfiction. It also depends on individuals perspective.
Our group believes cyber space is probably one of the most powerful forms of communication compared to drawings, and writing because cyber space’s ability to transfer information and the accessibility of this information has shown great leaps and bounds in today’s sciences and technological fields. It has also pushed human kind into a new era of advancements.

Vanessa Blaylock and Joseph Cornell are both remarkable artist in their own ways. On one hand Vanessa Blaylock is a very virtual artist, where as most of Joseph’s work is physical. Both artists work are figures of their personal interpretations of different places and concepts. Cornell created boxes about countries he has never visited and Blaylock created a variety of digital people the way she perceived humans to be. We believe there is a different between fantasy and reality but at types the two can coincide, therefore the answer is not absolutely yes or absolutely no. Additionally, Harry Potter is fake and fiction, but that doesn’t mean the book and characters are not able to express ideas and concepts very dear to our heart.Countless fiction books do not embody topics people can relate to as much as fiction stories such as Harry Potter. Everyone in our group was born in 1996 and are 19 year old students living in a very technologically advanced ,diverse, and industrialized society. The works of Vanessa Blaylock and Joseph Cornell are similar in that they are interpretable by anyone as either real or unreal. There is no barrier, each person takes an experience to be real or unreal. The definition of reality has not been defined; each person finds reality or virtuality in an experience based on their own life experience.
There is no difference between fantasy and reality; it is all perception based on the person’s background. If something impacts at least one person in the world, it becomes a part of reality.
It could be argued either way that Harry Potter and other fictional stories are more or less important than nonfiction written works. Real people being affected in nonfiction has more of an impact on some people than others, as it may be more relatable. On the other hand, some people can create stronger bonds with fictional characters than with accounts of real people/experiences.
Art in painting relates to people currently because it is open to more interpretation and variety. This was the only way to express oneself when imagery was the only way to communicate. Art as writing only allows so much imagination from the words that are written, but language becomes more modern as time goes on to make it more relatable. We feel more now from what people can create because people can convey more emotion with the words they write, language and writing introduces new forms of communication. Art and communication in CyberSpace can be as open as you want, you can access the works of many people who relate to you in a matter of seconds. The internet makes it easier to access people with your sense of thought.
The group thought that Joseph Cornell art uses more sketcy realistic drawings,and Vanessa Blaylock uses more 3-D drawings.
Cornells art is more traditional,and Blaylock is more modern and graphic. Both artisit are able to express emotions. Vanessa characters are limited and makes us only feel one emotion because of how she shapes the character, and Joseph drawings also have emotions with more depth, as we ship our eye to different colors and shapes will make us think beyond our imagination ,and continues the more we look at it. However, whether Blaylock drawings seem more “cartoonish” than Cornell drawings who seems more “real” ,we believe that both artist portray fantasy and reality into the same world, the world where there is no reality.

Vanessa Blaylock has virtual art however it is based off of real humans and perceptions. Joseph Cornell has tangible objects. Both artworks seem real to all of us because even though it is virtual they are both considered art since we don’t touch the ones that are physically there. The two artist creates art that is virtual which can be real and not fictional characters. They base them on characteristics of real humans.
There is a difference between fantasy and reality. Fantasy can be anything you want it to be in comparison to reality where there are limits to what you can and cannot do. We believe that everyone has their own perspective on life and fantasy is there for us to imagine some things that are not attainable here. Everyone has a different view about fantasy and reality however I believe that fantasy is a way one can get away and create something they would want to be real. However, it is possible for people to make their fantasy into reality if they put their mind into it.
Fiction and non-fiction give the same amount of emotion it just varies on the individual’s imagination. If anything fiction conveys more emotion than non-fiction. I think that fiction is more about emotions because one creates fictional by using their experiences and imagination.

If somebody has an idea then it isn’t physical, but the moment when the idea becomes a physical product then it becomes real. Both works of art are similar in the sense that they created their own world within reality. They’re both real. One is on a virtual platform, while the other is on a physical platform.
A fantasy is when an imagination runs wild and a thought becomes something that is practically impossible to achieve in the physical world we live in. Reality is someone’s perception of the current physical world we live in. A person’s perception of reality is most likely to be changed when they are introduced to new ideas or thoughts.
Although Harry Potter is a fictional character, he has human qualities that we, as readers, can relate to. The author wrote the book with the intent to make the fictional character appeal to the emotion of the reader, therefore the relationship between Harry Potter and the readers are real. Sometimes there may be more truth in fiction than in nonfiction. We can relate to the emotions and situations that Harry Potter goes through. For example, Harry losing both his parents at a young age or going through difficulties at Hogwarts.
We think that painting, writings, and cyberspace are capable of conveying messages that could relate to us. It could be passed on for many generations and each individual would have different interpretations of what they think about the painting, writing, or cyberspace. The year does not matter because we’ll appreciate the artwork that is created.

Our group thought that both artists have differences between their types of works, but we also thought that they were similar in a way. Even though Cornell creates physical boxes, he creates a world within it with his imagination similar to how Blaylock creates virtual avatars in their own world. Both works can be considered real depending on how they are perceived.
We agreed that there is definitely a difference between fantasy and reality. Although, parts of the fantasy world can be considered real. The mickey mouse example showed that it can be real when considering its financial success, but it’s not physically breathing.
Even though Harry Potter is a fictional story, it can convey thoughts and emotions that people experience in reality. Non-fiction books can also do the same, but we believe that fictional books can be more powerful than non-fiction at times. It really depends on the books.
Painting, writing, and cyberspace can definitely express things that matter to us. It has existed since ancient times and will continue to stay because of the fact that it provokes different emotions and thoughts to us. Whether a person is looking at a painting during their own time period or one from another time period, they can always relate to their own experience within their life time.

1) We agreed that in the most literal sense that Vanessa Blaylock’s characters are not real. However, we do believe that because she used elements from her real life to ultimately create her characters, this made the avatars real to her. People often make their virtual reality their ideal reality. Oscar Wilde said it perfectly, “Man is least himself when he speaks in person, give him a mask and he will speak the truth.” Vanessa is a virtual artist and uses technology to bring the characters to life. She was able to communicate through her characters while Joseph Cornell, a physical artist, creates little worlds in his boxes. The little girl who played with Joseph’s boxes used her imagination and in turn gave the boxes life.
2) We believed the difference between fantasy and reality is based on the perception of each person. Some people perceive fantasy and reality to be completely different worlds, while others say they go hand-in-hand. However, our group said they do overlap. For example, Mickey Mouse is a creation from the imagination of Walt Disney, yet a great deal of money was generated due to this mouse, even though he was a made-up character. Fantasy allows room for innovation and is no less important then reality. Overall, you cannot have one without the other. Fantasy and reality need each other for survival.
3) Although Harry Potter is a fictional story, this does not mean it is any less meaningful than the work of non-fiction. Furthermore, we did believe the world in Harry Potter was in fact very real because the main character, Harry, endured real life experiences that many humans face, such as the death of a loved one. Therefore, the audience had the ability to connect on a very deep level with Harry and the other characters. We were able to have an emotional connection. In a different perspective, there are many who adore Harry Potter, while others do not care for the story so much. These opinions will affect peoples’ beliefs of whether or not the fictional story is meaningful to them.
4) We are capable of using the outlets of painting, writing, and cyberspace to express ourselves in any way we choose. We are able to personalize anything through a painting, something written, or even social media. Personal experiences are commonly utilized to share a message with others and cyberspace, specifically, can reach millions of people quicker than a painting or something written. Therefore, this can be more impactful in a smaller amount of time.

There’s two different types of art going on here in the form of tattooing & hair styling. Kat von D’s work is dark. A majority of her work is tattoos. Guy Tang is a hair stylist. His hair styles are very fruity with vibrant colors that stand out. Some similarities between Them are that they both help people express themselves.

We believe there’s an obvious difference between tattoos and hair coloring – tattoos are permanent so they’re more of a big deal but you can re-dye your hair whenever you want and if you cut it it’ll always grow back. The similarity between them lies in the fact that they do whatever their client wants and don’t have free reign with their art. They are both in beauty industry – Kat Von D makes makeup and Guy Tang makes hair products. We respect their work; it’s really difficult to tattoo people or mix perfect hair color and they do a good job.

For our group we felt that their fame was due to social medis and their personality. They decided to go beyond what most would stop and took it to the next level. We felt like they were making a statement by having their work out there in social media. We felt that their work had little to do with them being famous, but rather their personality made them the icons they are today. Their eccentric personality has made them famous and artistic icons in today’s media. For both of them we said that they were more similar than different. They both crave attention by posting pictures of their work on social media, and both rely on people’s responses whether it be negative or positive.
Both artists, Kat Von D and Guy Tang, express art using the human body. For instance, Kat Von D tattoos art into the skin, while Guy Tang shows his artwork through hair. We found that these two forms of art expression is unique and different from painting on canvases. Both artists are also from Los Angeles. Kat Von D specialized in portraits (tattoos) that are personal and permanent to an individual while Guy Tang’s form of art is more expressive and temporary. Guy Tang’s art is more dependent on the mixture of the color dye and the technique he used on individual, while Kat Von d’s art focuses more on the drawings of figures that is meaningful to the individual. Guy Tang’s arts are more visible to public while Kat Von D’s tattoo can be hidden under clothes.

Our group thought that Guy Tang brought hair-coloring to a whole new level. He basically made hair-dyeing into an art. Guy loves using extravagant colors for his clients’ hair and the process itself is a tedious one. Much like painting a picture, he uses bright colors and a brush. He paints certain parts of their hair according to “how he feels.” In contrast to Guy Tang who specializes in transforming regular hair into something beautiful & remarkable, Kat Von D is a tattoo artist and has her own makeup line. We’re more familiar with Kat Von D and Guy Tang than traditional artists because they’re working with current trends (body modification is very popular in present-day culture). Additionally, Guy Tang is a YouTuber and Kat Von D once had her own reality tv show (LA Ink). Both of these artists found a way to incorporate their artwork into everyday usage. Whereas traditional paintings are usually hung on walls, Guy and Kat’s art is wearable. In comparison to other fashion artist who design clothes that are more for runway shows which we as college students would most likely not wear or even be able to afford.

Today we are reviewing Kat Von D and Guy Tang. Kat Von D is best known for being a tattoo artist, while Guy Tang is a hair stylist. Kat also dabbles in a lot of other things such as makeup and modeling, with her own makeup line. Tang, on the other hand, has a youtube channel and a hair care line. We noticed that in Guy’s Facebook page, every picture he posts is relatively perfect pictures of people’s hair, and we feel that is not realistic of everyday people. He also isn’t taking any new clients, and is inspired by pop culture. Kat credits her Grandma as inspiration for her art, and Latin culture in LA for her tattoo work. She actually got her first tattoo at 14, and dropped out of school at 16. Both Kat and Guy are in the spotlight in Los Angeles, and are popular with celebrities. These two have their own art forms and express it through their work in hair makeup and tattoos.

Kat Von D and Guy Tang are both remarkable artists in their fields. She is a contemporary tattoo artist where he is a hair dying expert. She always tries to incorporate her image but also her customers image and wants in each of her pieces, even though it is a representation of her and her work. As a group we believe in a social context, a tattoo sticks to a persons personality and individuality which is what Kat Von D really tries to embody in her work depending on the individual.Her tattoos really are a cohesive vision of herself and the wants of the customer which we think is very important and vital for a meaningful and symbolic tattoo.On the other hand, Guy Tang is very well known in the Hollywood community for his expertise in ombre coloring. He goes against the societal norm of natural hair colors but adds vibrant colors impeccably.When comparing the two artists we realized, Kat Von D’s work is meant to be permanent and ever lasting because a tattoo is mean to last for the rest of someones life, where as Guy Tangs work is temporary due to the fact people can always change their hair colors and usually do over time!

Our group found a lot of differences between the two artists and their art styles. While both have to do with outward appearances and body modification, they have very distinct differences. We gathered that being a tattoo artist requires a lot more skill and precision than being a hair stylist. Kat Von D specializes in tattoos of portraits, seemingly sticking to mostly black and white with few other colors. The process requires a large amount of skill and talent, and the room for error is extremely small. Also, tattoos require a great deal of commitment due to the permanence and irreversibility of the process. Guy Tang is also very talented in his art, dying hair vibrant and unique colors. While this does require a great deal of talent, it does not necessarily entail the same permanence that tattoos do. It is relatively easy to fix a mistake or to change it if someone is unhappy with the outcome. However, fixing or erasing a tattoo requires a long and expensive process. Both Kat Von D and Guy Tang are extremely talented and successful artists in their fields, but their work could not be more different.

Kat Von D is an american tattoo artist who is famous for her work and also for coming out in a very well known TV show called LA Ink, where she displays her work. Her parents were born in Argentina but her grandparents were from Germany and Italy. She was inspired by her grandma to do art and music, which is why she later decided to become a tattoo artist. Also, she is an entrepreneur because she has her own make up brand and models.
Guy Tang is a famous hair designer. He is on Yelp and works at West Hollywood. He considers himself a hair activist. In order to get an appointment with this guy you’d have to be prepared to wait because his appointments are very exclusive. Currently he is not taking anymore clients, meaning that he is only providing his service for those who are already his clients. His clients have been very pleased by his work, it is evident he is talented in his work. He uses ISO Hair Color and has developed a reputation as an “ombre expert”. He also has tutorials through his YouTube channel where he teaches high contrast ombres.
These two artists are different from the past artists we’ve gone over in this class, firstly, because they are more of an up to date artist who focus on things that are very popular to date. Secondly, they are more hip and social. For example, Guy has a YouTube channel like mentioned before where he shows others how to do certain hairstyles. It’s another way to be in contact with those who cannot get a chance to get a haircut by him. Kat Von D, is up to date because she uses her work (tattoos), which is so popular today, to demonstrate her talent.

We thought Guy Tang was really good. He does mostly pastel color and not a lot of bright colors. He does a lot of before and after pictures and we thought it was a lot like the instrgram filters by the way he changed the looks of people then the way they were originally. He makes it seem possible for anyone to have or to do themselves. He does a lot of shows around the world and creates different styles that make the hair seem elegant.
Kat Von D is a tattoo artist that does a lot of different styles. Her art is very dark and her instagram is mostly about her, not her work. She does a lot of faces, symbols and skull because they are her speciality. She also has a lot of calligraphy on people has well.
Compared to Guy Tang, Kat Von D does not have a good selection of her work to view from. Guy Tang’s work was easy to find, and more colorful to look at, while Kat Von D’s work is mostly black, red, and white.
The difference is that the art that Guy Tang and Kat Von D do can live with you for either the rest of your life (a tattoo) or for a short period of time (hair). The reason why they are more well known is because it is something people see everyday and are interested in, instead of an art piece in a museum that the person will only see once.
Both Guy Tang and Kat Von D have a different connection than the other artist we talked about during class because they work with celebrities, you tubers and use social media. In this time social media is so big it’s a way of bringing people in and not a lot of people want to go to museums or galleries so these artist access people through the Internet. They both address the younger generations with hair, makeup and tattoos. For example Kat Von D expanded her art to make up which is really big and makes her art more well known. They aren’t just paintings or sculptures, they are things that have become more popular in today’s society. This art from these two artist is modern and connects more to this generation since tattoos and colorful hair as an expression and it is more accepted and seen in. Positive light though out the world. Both of their works, we think are considered body art because they both are part of our appearance. For tattoos they are part of us forever, since they are permanent. Then for hair dye, although it can be easily changed but it’s permanent for a while. It’s a way of expression through our body and we can show people a part of us or who we like when we even walk around. For example tattoos can show parts of people’s life or something important to them. Even if people might judge you for having these things art is always meant to judge even in the different forms of art.

Kat Von D is a tattoo artist, she is able to use your body as a canvas to express yourself. By being a tattoo artist you are able to permanently draw on your body. As it is your body you can do whatever you want to it, so why not turn it into art. Her artwork is different from the normal artist because instead of hanging your art in say an art exhibit. The body of the person is out for everybody to see. She tattoos images of what people desire to be on their body and usually every tattoo has a significant meaning. To Kat being able to tattoo her body gives her the opportunity to express herself as she pleases and at the same time being able to show her artistic abilities to the world.
Guy Tang’s work shows the complexity and dynamic colors of hair. He goes beyond societal norm and makes his canvas (hair) into something extraordinary with drastic colorization. He evens styles his patient’s hair with vivid styles that emphasizes the color. What makes both of these artists different from other artists is that they try to represent the individual rather than the culture. Unlike traditional forms of art, tattoo and hair is part of the body; thus making one’s canvas sacred in the sense that it represent their individuality. Their dynamic attributes allow individuals to really show off their personality through their own body.

Guy Tang is best known for his hair color designs, while Kat Von D is best known for her tattoo designs. Both, Guy Tang and Kat Von D, are both internet sensations made popular by their expressed art. Guy Tang was inspired by Vidal Sassoon for his precision cuts. Kat Von D realized her natural artistic ability with tattoos after she got her first tattoo at the age of 14. However different in art forms, they are made by their impressive skills. Kat Von D expresses her art using the skin on people’s body, while Guy Tang uses different pigments of color in hair to express his. On one hand, Guy Tang is more limited in expressing his art. With hair, he can only color it and mix it up that way. For Kat Von D, the skin gives her more of a palette where she can express more of her art. We could see different drawings or art and colors with tattoos, while with hair we can only see colors. We were discussing the differences between the two artists, and there were some disagreements. Half of the group thought that tattoos are more meaningful, while the pigmented hair isn’t as meaningful. Some people claim that because the hair color doesn’t last, it isn’t as meaningful as getting a tattoo. Some people claim that getting a tattoo is more meaningful since it’s permanent.
Wk 10 Discussion:
We feel that the works of both Kat Von D and Guy Tang have great value as works of art. While Kat Von D utilizes the human body as her canvas, Guy Tang creates art out of peoples’ hair. In this way, both artists create ephemeral art, which arguably has additional value for its temporary nature. We also believe that the works of both artists can be just as valuable as that of traditional artists, such as painters and sculptors. However, it could be said that the works of tattoo artists are not always as valuable to the artists themselves, as they often dervive from the requests and imaginations of others. Similarly, the works of hair artists are often created by commission, from the requests of clients. By creating works that are not derivative of the imaginations of the artists themselves, the works are not very personal and possibly as valuable to the artists themselves. However, if the tattoo and hair artists create works that are personal to them, the value of the works are perhaps increased, as they likely more accurately reflect the artists themselves, similar to the personal works of our society’s most revered traditional artists.

Looking at Kat Von D and Guy Tang, both of their work is amazing art, Their work is definitely different than what we see on Thursdays in the galleries.
Kat Von D is a tattoo artist and carries her work on herself. We believe her art is much deeper than the art on a canvas, because it takes pain to get all of these pieces and is permanent.
In comparison to Guy Tang, his work involves a lot of different colors. It is trendy and stylish but it is temporary. His work is beautiful but we don’t believe it is as deep as Kat’s. One can tell that Tang’s work is something that one would want to continue after getting it done the first time. His work is also something that changes over time. Once you get your hair dyed it could transform from those colors to the lighter colors once the dye starts to fade. Also when people start growing in their natural hair color it changes the whole color piece for the artist that was not intended at all.

what our group thinks about Artist Guy Tang who does different hair styles and mix of hair colors. Is that the Hair is made to look like it is floating and fantasy.
and Kat Von Dee who does tattoos, that are personal, cultural, and emotional.
Both are big statement makers. There work makes statements. Without holding back or looking back.
They are things that we see everyday, we are used to it, or at least those who are part of the culture.
Art can be represented as different things to different people.
Tattoos are permanent, forever, art pieces on human skin, it can be cheap but hard and expensive to remove and hair might be temporary.
Kat Von Dee uses mostly black, monochromatic colors while Guy uses a more variety of color. Television exposure has really helped make her popular, famous and on demand.
She does a lot of portrait tattoos with a story behind it.
While hair color might seem simple, there might be a special reason why the person wants their hair colored a certain way and color.
Tattoos and hair styles can be just about looks but sometimes it can be about much more. About making a statement, or going through a tramatic experience that makes them want a tattoo to show their pain, or glory.
Tattoos become a way of life, part of the person.
Tattoos and hair styles tell a lot about the person’s personality. Guy’s clients tend to be mostly women.
Kat Von D is from Mexico, she got her first tattoo at age 14, and started her career at 16. Guy is also young and has many clients.
The artist Kat Von D is known for body art, or more specifically tattoo art, while Guy Tang is known for hair style art. When observing the two styles, we noticed that since tattoo art is more permanent, it is probably more emotional to the person who the tattoo is on. We found that when comparing these types of art to canvass art, canvass art allows the viewers to feel more of an emotional attachment rather than just the owner of the body art. Tattoos usually have a more personal and emotional resting place to the person who decides upon one. Hair however, can be easily changed and regrown. Hence, we saw it as more of a style and less permanent. While it is a representation of oneself, it is perhaps not as meaningful as ink imprinted on one’s skin. Hair does indeed cary a fair amount of weight in a person’s complexion, but alike the individual, changes with time.
