안녕하세요
Welcome to the 5th of our 12 weeks of Artful Summer!
Art Idea #5 – Sometimes the Art is on The Street
Often we visit Art Galleries and Art Museums to see art. This can be a great experience. When you take the tram from the Getty Center parking lot up the hill to the Getty Center itself, this is a liminal experience. We leave, for a little while, the mess and worries of the city.
Art should be in white cubes like galleries and museums. But art should also be part of life. Art should also be integrated with the places we live. The places we experience and create culture.
Painting – Graffiti Writing – Street Art
This week we’re trying some Street Art. Let’s paint our names in Bubble Letters.

Useful
All careers in the 21st century lean heavily on communication. Your ability to organize visual space can impact your career success. Graffiti Writing is pretty different from Business Infographics. Yet, both require a blending of clarity and visual power to have an impact. How do different color pallette choices speak to different audiences in different cultures? Play with Adobe’s Color Pallette builder: color.adobe.com. How do letter style choices, in spray paint or in font choices, communicate moods and qualities? Can you make letters that feel angry or anarchistic? Can you make letters that feel like financial security? Can you make letters that convey authority? Whimsey?
Artists OTW
This week it’s again your turn to pick your own Artists OTW.
- Pick 2 living painters
- Painter #1 should be a Graffiti Writer. From anywhere in the world. Or maybe from Los Angeles.
- Painter #2 should be a Fine Art or Gallery Painter. Meaning simply that they show paintings in art galleries. Maybe a blue-chip artist collected by museums like The Broad. Or a red-chip or emerging artist. Maybe a young painter from the LBSU SOA.
Once you’ve got your 2 painters, do some research. Look at their work. Find video interviews with them.
- Name your blog post Wk 5 – Artists OTW – [name] & [name]
- Describe Painter #1’s work
- Describe Painter #2’s work
- Talk about how their work is similar
- Talk about how their work is different
- Discuss the difference between Street Art and Gallery Art
- What are the strengths of Gallery Art?
- What are the weaknesses of Gallery Art?
- What are the strengths of Street Art?
- What are the weaknesses of Gallery Art?
- If you were going to be an artist, would you rather be a Street Artist or a Gallery Artist? Why? Discuss!
