Hi guys!
Welcome to Art110!
I hope you have a great experience in Art110 and at CSULB this semester.
Call Me Coach, or better yet, just call me Glenn. 😀
You have 2 chances to meetup this week – besides class time:
1. Wed 11-12:30 at the USU tables inside from Robeks / Coffee Bean
2. Sun 9-Noon at the Seal Beach Pier for the Plaster Casting activity
Come say Hi! And ask any questions! 🙂
Things 2 Do
The 1st week of Art110 can seem a little daunting since there’s new tools to sign up for and use. But I’m pretty sure in a week or two you’ll find it all pretty easy. And most of you will probably like doing weekly blog posts & discussion posts better than long lectures from me and exams and quizzes (of which there are none!)
Each week we do 3 out of 4 things:
- Watch & Discuss short “Art Talk” video
- Try an Art Activity
- Have a conversation with a classmate
- Have a conversation with a CSULB School of Art (SOA) Artist
Every week we’ll do #1, and 2 out of 2, 3, 4. We won’t have any Artist Conversations in the 1st 2 weeks. Weeks 1 & 2 will be Art Talk Video, Art Activity & Classmate Convo.
The only “extra” stuff to do this 1st week is to sign up for a few things, like Slack where we’ll do our discussions (and you can also ask any questions on Slack) and WordPress where you can do your 2 weekly blog posts. Plus there’s a little “Say Hi” form you can fill out so you can get to know each other.
Here’s everything:
0. Schedule
1a. Say Hi (URL)
If you drop by this page, answer a few questions, and upload a pix of yourself, it’ll add you to our Art110 Welcome page! 😀
1b. Say Hi (IRL)
I have virtual Office Hours on Mondays from 9-9:30 on our Slack Channel (more about Slack below) and also F2F Office Hours on Wednesdays from 11-12:30 at the USU Tables just inside from Robeks / Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf. Come say Hi! LMK if you have any questions about anything or if you need anything. Most semesters not all that many students come see me during OH, so to add some interest this semester at “Coffee Bean OH” I’ll also be reading Tarot Cards! 😛 Come by and ask questions! About life, college, whatever’s on your mind.
2a. Join our Slack Channel
We’ll be using a pretty cool communication tool, Slack, for our class communications. It’s where you’ll do the weekly Art Talk discussions, where you can ask questions about anything Art110, and also a place to connect with classmates, publicly or in private IM, for working on things together or anything else. Here’s a look:

Here’s the link to join our Slack Channel it will be valid from Jan 20-27, so try to join soon! 😀
2b. Watch Art Talk Video
Here’s the Art Talk video OTW. Watch it and then discuss it on Slack.
3a. Make a Website
As you’ll read in the Syllabus there won’t be any exams or quizzes or anything physical to turn in (except for 4×6″ “ID Cards”) Instead you’ll make a free WordPress.com website and do blog posts for the various weekly activities. They only thing to “turn in” is the 1st week when you visit the Art110 Roster Page and LMK what the URL for your website is. After that, you’ll just post work by midnight on Sunday and I’ll go take a look and give you points on BeachBored on Mondays.
3b. Do Activity #1 Plaster Casting
Full details on the Plaster Casting Activity Page!
Do a blog post on your WordPress website writing up your Plaster Casting Activity
I’ll be at the Seal Beach Pier Sunday morning from 9am to Noon. You don’t really need my help, but it’d be nice to have a chance to meetup. And the weather’s supposed to finally be decent! And I’ll bring a couple gallons of homemade iced tea! Details on the Plaster Casting Activity Page!
3c. Do a Classmate Conversation in Class on Wed
Yes, that! 😀
And then do a separate blog post on your website.
4. Read the Syllabus!
I know you probably won’t do this one. It’s long and not entirely an exciting read. But for the next 4 months you’re going to be asking me questions, almost all of which were already answered in the syllabus. The syllabus is the contract between you and me. Want to pass the class? Want to ace the class? The syllabus tells you how. Curious about the points you got on an activity? The syllabus explains your points. Want to know how to format your Artist Conversation? The syllabus has a sample template. I know you won’t do it, but really, I’m begging you, read the syllabus.
Comments? Questions? What great art did you see, make, or experience today?
