Jimena Sarno's installation "Home Away From" at Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions (LACE) on Hollywood Blvd in Los Angeles. The full-gallery installation consists of a lath-and-no-plaster wooden structure with a long corridor leading to a round room. The corridor and room have a few lights bulbs hanging like pendulums from long cords. This is the only light in the installation. Visitors can sway the lights like pendulums. The lights cast shadows inside the space and also through the lath they make geometric patters on the gallery walls on the other side. The piece is accompanied by an ambient music score that comes in through the lath.

Home Away From

Artist Jimena Sarno‘s installation Home Away From at Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions (LACE) consists of lath-and-no-plaster, sound, and light. The lath walls she erected form a long, narrow corridor that leads to a round room. It is not a yurt, but it has something of that quality when you sit inside. Along the narrow corridor are 3 lightbulbs on very long “pendulum” cords, with a 4th light in the center of the round room. Visitors can swing the lights like pendulums and create dynamic shadows inside the corridor, and even more dramatic shadows outside the corridor as the intersecting lath patters sway across the white gallery walls. A speaker behind the round room delivers an ambient sound score through the lath walls.

Jimena Sarno

Kamal and I ran into artist Jimena Sarno inside the round room two days before the installation closed. We had a nice conversation about her work. Kamal found the light and sound sublime and chose to meditate in the space for a while.

Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions

Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions (LACE) is on Hollywood Blvd. It’s literally on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, with stars on the sidewalk right outside the entrance. And yet LACE is a world apart from the Walk of Fame. They are both powerful cultural touchstones. For all those who feel the inexorable pull to visit the Walk of Fame, I’d encourage you to also visit LACE. It’s on the south side of Hollywood Blvd, between Highland and Vine.
