5 Long Beach State University Dance BFA students: Spencer Jensen who I just met tonight, plus 4 of my former students: Antonella Redekosky, Nathan Moreno, Makenna LaFortune & Toria Painter, perform new works at Steelcraft in Long Beach.
They all graduate next month. As part of their BFA Thesis work, they created this performance in a public(ish) space. The arts so often walk a line between elitism and inclusion. It was wonderful to see these artists leave the proscenium stage and bring their work to a more vernacular space. They performed 3 pieces. The first was a group piece with audience input: audience members could change the song on the iPad, or hold up a different “color card”, each action would change their movement. There were also pieces choreographed by Toria Painter and Spencer Jensen.
This was my 1st visit to Steelcraft which opened just a year ago. It’s a cool, open-air space composed of brightly painted cargo containers. Several different food & drink peeps are housed in the container spaces, with a common seating area in the center. And also an astroturfish space in the center where the dance pieces were presented. It was great to see these pieces performed at this site. The pieces struck me as choreography presented at a site. Site-specific choreography would also have been interesting.
